Elves!

The Red Elves are a race I am particularly fond of. Like most fantasies nowadays, not only does the author create different races like dwarves, humans and elves. No, they like to make sub-races like wood elf, dark elf, petty dwarves and so forth. Not wanting to borrow the same names and fall into the same mold and images, I decided to create a new sub-race: the Red Elf.

After the first great war the immortal elves were divided. Some wanted to build up lasting settlements and great riches, to become very powerful and lordly. Others wanted to have no more to do with the earth, and so they chose to wander the seas, hoping to return to the old gods. And still others felt an intense calling to the earth, to protect it. This latter sect became a nomadic people, whose tribal mysticism gives them a unique connection to the wilds.

The Red Elves do not set up permanent settlements, but wander here and there in small tribes, living off the land and learning it's language. They are not particularly fond of most folk, though they have been know to trade with traveling dwarves. Mostly, they keep to thier own. They are seldom seen, unless they want to be, for the red elves have learned much of the natural world and how to blend into their surroundings.

The mystic ways of the red elf shaman are quite unique to their world. They do not worship any paticular diety, rather they roam and give thanks to the dieties they encounter in nature. These elves are not on good terms with thier brethren, the high elves. Their lack of oneness to the earth makes them "unclean." The high elves, on the other hand, consider their red counterparts to be primitively savage, denying them leave into their lands.

They Are Very Big

So in this world I'm inventing I decided there should be giants and dwarves. Both come from the ground; one dwells above it, the other in it. The giants (mountain giants to be specific) were created to be the tenders and movers of mountains. They are very few, as they do not multiply. They consider the mountains to be their "children."

THEY SLEEP.

Every several hundred years they awaken from their long sleep to raise and tear down their charge of mountains. Not many have seen these giants, as they sleep for many, many years, and when they sleep they seem to become one with the mountains. At times civilizations would build upon them in hibernation, and slowly be destroyed in it's waking. Imagine those stumbling upon them sleeping, thinking they were but the ruins of a once great society.

THE AFFAIRS OF MORTALS

The giants have never interfered with the doings of mortal races. They are slow to awaken, slow to anger, slow to move, and slow to change. Even the dwarves cannot stir the hearts of the giants, though they are thought to be akin. It would seem to some that they do not care about anything or anyone, but that is a falicy. They care deeply for the earth.

A Long, Long Time Ago...

A while back I was reading a lot of Tolkien and Lewis, and one of my new favorites, Christopher Poalini. when I decided that I wanted to write and epic fantasy novel. So I doodled and pondered and I decided the best thing to do would be to draw a map.

This was four years ago.

Every time I pull out this map I realize that this world could actually have a great story to tell. So far I have written much of the histories and lore of this world, and there are many stories to tell within those histories.

Now, I would like to share this world with you.

Within the next... hmmm... months I will explore and share with you the thought processes and development of the cultures, races and histories of this world. I invite you to leave your comments, critiques, and queries. This will be an adventure.

The Beginning

Welcome to my blog!

You've no doubt wondered, "Why, Matt? Why have you created this blog? What do you plan on showing the world? What purpose could you possiblyhave for doing such a thing?"

Well, to answer your question...

This blog is here to display the things I create, have created, or are in the process of creating. For instance, if I told you I was writing a book, I might post a chapter on here to get some feedback on how it looks. Or if I drew a really neat picture I might put it up here to see what everyone thinks. Same with songs and ideas and so forth....

The point is...

My job will be to update my blog about three times a week. Your job is to come a check out what's new. I hope you enjoy and learn as much as I hope to learn from you!
